About The Assets

Exploration Licence “Nördlicher Oberrhein”

The Northern Upper Rhine and Northern Upper Rhine II licences essentially cover the Hessian part of the Upper Rhine Graben. Within these licences lie the following oil and gas fields, which were decommissioned in the 1970s to 1990s: The Stockstadt oil field was discovered in 1952 and filled in 1994. Approximately one million tons of oil were produced from the sandstones of the Pechelbronn beds (depths of 1,500 m to 2,000 m).

Further south are the smaller deposits of Wattenheim, Hofheim, and Worms, some of which produced oil for only short periods and were subsequently filled. In the past, natural gas was also produced from the much shallower sandstones of the Upper Tertiary (depths of 400 m to 800 m) in the Wolfskehlen, Darmstadt-Pfungstadt, and Stockstadt fields. The latter has been converted and now serves as a natural gas storage facility. The other fields were closed after several hundred million cubic metres of gas had been produced.

In 2015, the "Schwarzbach 1a" well proved the presence of another deposit, for which a production licence "Schwarzbach" was granted in 2018. The "Schwarzbach 2" well further developed the deposit in 2023.

Exploration Licence “Graben-Neudorf”

Oil drilling has been taking place in the licence since the early 1930s. The Forst-Weiher oil field produced from 1935 to 1960 and was filled in without ever applying modern exploration and production technologies. The same applies to the former Rot oil field, which produced from 1953 to 1963. Extensive 3D seismic surveys were conducted in 2011 to provide a detailed evaluation of the existing potential within this licence.

In 2019, the "Steig 1" exploration well in Weingarten (Baden) identified another oil field, which will be further explored and developed in the coming years.

Exploration Licence “Weschnitz”

Although no old oil and gas fields exist within the licence, Lime Resources Germany believes that the Tertiary oil source rocks generated hydrocarbons that likely fed both the Römerberg oil field and the Hessian oil fields.

In 2012, extensive 3D seismic surveys were conducted to geologically map the subsurface.

Because this area is also interesting from the perspective of geothermal energy production, there is significant synergy potential for future exploration work.

Exploration Licence “Karlsruhe-Leopoldshafen”

Oil drilling took place in the licence in the 1950s. The Graben and Leopoldshafen oil fields discovered at that time produced crude oil between 1957 and 1986. Extensive 3D seismic surveys were conducted in 2011 to further evaluate the potential within this licence.

The Leopoldshafen 20 well drilled in the southern part of the licence in the summer of 2013 detected further oil.

Further studies are currently being conducted to assess the geological situation.

Production Licence “Schwarzbach”- Oil Field and the Erfelden Area

The Schwarzbach oil field is located within the larger Erfelden area, which includes the now long-abandoned Stockstadt and Kuhkopf fields. 3D seismic shot over the Erfelden area in 2012 showed significant remaining potential. Based on the 3D seismic, along with the historical well data, the Schwarzbach 1 well was drilled in 2015, proving oil in the Oligocene Pechelbronner-Schichten (PBS) sandstone reservoirs.

In 2023, the Schwarzbach-2 well was drilled and put on production. Currently, the field is producing. Lime Resources Germany is currently analysing the data in the area to determine the best way forward on these assets. This could involve drilling of more production wells in the Schwarzbach Field and also further near-field exploration drilling within the Erfelden area.

Production Licence “Lauben” - Oil Field (50 per cent interest)

The Lauben is located in the Molasse Basin south-west of Munich. The field produced some 140,000 barrels of oil between 1958 and 1985. In 2016, the field was redeveloped with the Lauben 7 well, with ONEO as the operator. Lime Resources Germany is working closely with the operator to determine the way forward on Lauben.
